Maurice Phaneuf Obituary

Nashua- Maurice W. Phaneuf, 82, a lifetime resident of Nashua, died peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019 at The Community Hospice House in Merrimack. He is the beloved husband of Jeanne (Briand) Phaneuf, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage.

Maurice was born in Nashua on August 23, 1936 and was the son of the late Oscar and Alberta (Guerette) Phaneuf.

Maurice was variously employed by Horton and Hubbard Luggage, Producers Dairy, and Berkshire Inn, retiring after 29 years from Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company in 1999.

Maurice served 6 years with the New Hampshire National Guard, including a mobilization in support of the Berlin Crisis in 1961/62. Maurice also served as an Auxiliary Fireman with the Nashua Fire Department during the 1960s.

During his youth Maurice loved to play baseball, bowl and fish. These passions continued into adulthood as he played ball and bowled with Nashua Ward teams and employer teams until his retirement. He was also part of a pistol team at the Nashua Fish & Game Club.

Maurice, also known as Moe, Dad, Grampy, Grumpy. He was a man of great wit and brought a smile to everyone he encountered. His laughter was contagious. Maurice was always thinking of others and donated over 20 gallons of his blood over many years.  He also loved to travel, having travelled extensively with his wife, friends, and family. He loved to socialize and dance to rock and roll music (especially from the ’50’s era).

Maurice and his wife Jeanne have owned a beach cottage in Wells, ME since 1979. Maurice thoroughly enjoyed the beach: body surfing, sunning, horseshoeing, playing lawn darts, taking walks along the shore, socializing and joking with anyone within earshot.

In his free time, Maurice was a dedicated New England sports fan but found his favorite team in the Boston Red Sox. Above all, Maurice cherished his family deeply, and treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Maurice’s son Daniel died unexpectedly in 2001, at which time he took on the dual role of father and grandfather to his grandchildren Eric and Ashley Phaneuf.

In addition to his wife, Jeanne, Maurice is survived by his son COL (Ret) Alan M Phaneuf and his wife Carole (Nadeau) Phaneuf of Cranberry Twp, PA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren: Danielle Humphrey, her husband Aaron and 4 children (Lydia, Levi, Anne-Charlotte and Juliet); Cassandra Andress, her husband Joseph and 2 children (August and Etienne); Capt Alana Benischek, her husband Capt Mark Benischek and 1 child (Iris); Eric Phaneuf; Ashley Phaneuf; sister-in-law Claire (Demers) Phaneuf; and several aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Maurice was predeceased by his son Daniel L Phaneuf and brother Paul Phaneuf.
