Nelson S. Allan III

Nelson Sargent Allan III, 78, died peacefully on 2 July at his home in Nashua, following a lengthy illness. He was the first son and third child of Chester and Gwendolyn (Whalen) Allan of Eastport, Me. who predeceased him in 1978 and 1992, respectively. He was educated at the University of Maine, where he met his wife of 55 years, Patricia (Doak) Allan, who predeceased him on 30 July of 2016. They married in her hometown of Caribou, Me., on 14 September 1960.

After their college graduation in 1961, he worked for General Electric while taking his doctoral degree at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. After twenty-five years with General Electric in upstate New York, Dr. Allan took a position at Kollsman Instruments of Merrimack, where he worked for ten years. After his departure from Kollsman, he was a consultant engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration. After his retirement, he served for three terms in the New Hampshire State House as a representative for Ward 5 of Nashua.

Throughout his life, he was an active volunteer in his community, including stints as a Boy Scout leader, a volunteer with Kiwanis, a third-degree Knight of Columbus, a tax preparer for the elderly at the Nashua Public Library, and an Eucharistic Minister at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish. His favorite hobbies were flying light airplanes, visiting the ocean, skiing and sailing.

He is survived by his five children, his son John Allan and his wife Eve (Zumawtzak) of Binghamton, N.Y., his son Joseph Allan and his wife Denise (Russo) of Wilbraham, Mass., his daughter Jacqueline and her husband Michael Valentino of Endicott, N.Y., his daughter Jennifer Ferrante of Manchester, and his daughter Jessica and her husband Christopher Schmidt of Cambridge, Mass. Dr. Allan also had four grandsons – Nelson Allan IV of Binghamton, N.Y., Cameron and Connor Allan of Wilbraham, Mass., Kyle Abbott of Buffalo, N.Y. – and four granddaughters – Kirstie Abbott of Binghamton, N.Y., Anne Ferrante of Somerville, Mass., Alicia and Julianne Lavarnway of Cambridge, Mass., along with one great-grandson, Levi Abbott of Buffalo, N.Y.

Dr. Allan was predeceased by one elder sister, Gwendolyn Allan Gaboda of Sumter, S.C., in 2012. He is survived by one elder sister, Liane Allan Grodewald of Eastport, Me. and one younger brother, Thomas Allan of W. Gouldsboro, Me., along with many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on MONDAY, July 10th from 4 until 7 PM at ANCTIL-ROCHETTE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 21 Kinsley Street, Nashua.  A Requiem Mass will be held on TUESDAY, July 11th at 10 AM AM in St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Nashua, with immediate interment to follow at Saint-Louis de Gonzague Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to St. Joseph the Worker Building Fund.
