Rosemary
Gillis
Jul 21, 1931 — Dec 31, 2022
Rosemary (Curran) Gillis, of Nashua, passed away peacefully at Cornerstone Hospice in Tavares, Fl on Dec 31, 2022 in the presence of her children. She was the beloved wife of the late Ronald Gillis who predeceased her in 2019 after sharing 63 years of marriage.
Rosemary was born in Boston on July 21, 1931, the daughter of the late Patrick and Rose (Shine) Curran. She was fiercely proud of being the youngest of the Curran clan of 8 hooligans and had countless, entertaining stories of each of her siblings. Aunt Rosemary continued a close and treasured relationship with all her nieces and nephews.
She started working summers at the age of 13 as a steam presser. She worked for N.E. Telephone as a chief clerk in 1951 until her marriage. Her husband served in the United States Army for 20 years and when he retired, they returned to the Boston area (Nashua) in 1977 and she returned to the switchboard as a telephone operator and continued to raise their four children.
She was much the social butterfly (she knew everyone and their mother) and had many interests including bowling, golf, and playing Bunco, her favorite dice game. Rosemary loved traveling to many destinations, however her years of being a snowbird and spending her winters in Florida were her favorite. Every day, she would make sure to take her five-mile leisurely walks which she did for 25 years. She was a longtime and devoted parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Nashua. In her 60somethings she even took up acting with the Nashua Actorsingers; her favorite role was "Mama" in " I Remember Mama" and played the role of Claire in a production of Sweet Magnolias (she killed it). Her twisted sense of humor was her calling card. Above all, her most cherished time was spent with her loving family.
She is survived by her daughter and wonderful caretaker Shelly McGowan of Nashua; her sons Michael Gillis and his wife Janet Hayden of Port St Lucie, Fl, Daniel Gillis and his wife Laura of Auburn NH, and Thomas Gillis and his wife Anissa of Nashua; her grandchildren Brian Gillis, Kristen Swabowicz, Brandon Gillis, Patrick Gillis, Derek Gillis, Maria Gillis, TJ Gillis, Morgan Gillis as well as her great grandchildren Madison Yates , Ava Swabowicz, Chase Swabowicz, Jameson Gillis, Lucas Gillis.
Rosemary is predeceased by her husband Ronald, her granddaughter Stephanie McGowan and her Curran brothers (John, Joe Bum, Frank, Tommy, Bernie, Jimmy) and her sister Margaret (Peg).
