George Stanz Obituary

George Stanz, 77, lost the lifelong battle with his body on Friday, December 24, 2021 at Catholic Medical Center with his family by his side.

After being medically discharged from the U.S. Navy, he spent many days of his life fighting his body. His body has knocked him down more times than can be counted.  With the support of his family, prayers to St. Jude, and many electrolytes, he fought each battle with courage, sarcasm and an amazingly brave sense of humor.

Always by his side were his wife of 55 years, Marion (Benz), son Christopher and his wife Lisa, and daughter Jennifer and her husband David.

George and Marion moved from Pennsylvania to Nashua, New Hampshire in 1971.  There, he began his 35+ year career as an engineer with Honeywell and earned his Associates Degree at University of Lowell.

Through his more “energetic” years, he enjoyed many hobbies, fishing, beer, bowling, the chicken dance, disco dancing with Marion, margaritas, SCUBA diving, driving in his convertible, and his favorites, cooking and golf.   He was always trying new recipes and cooking techniques and humbly showing off his cooking skills.

Golf was his true passion.   He was a proud member and in the golf league of the Nashua Elks, along with many other golf leagues When he wasn’t on the driving range or a local NH course, he watched golf on TV.  He never seemed to think he played well, but his low handicap proved otherwise.  Oh, and he was so proud of that Hole in One in Myrtle Beach.   After his retirement, they spent winters in Florida so he could golf year-round!

His family grew to include 5 grandchildren, Trevor, Ty, Anna, Samantha and Christopher.   To them, he was PopPop, and he was the smartest man alive.  Need help with math or history? Call PopPop.  Need someone for your trivia team? Call PopPop. Need help with just about anything…call PopPop

George, Dad, PopPop made everything more fun.  Throughout his life, he just wanted everyone to be happy and not worry about him.  He did a damn good job of making that happen, and…he shared his french-fries.

George was born in Darby, Pennsylvania to his Mom, Margaret “Peg”(Straub) Smith and Earl Stanz.   He had two siblings, Sandra Christina, currently of Mantua, NJ, and was pre-deceased by his brother, Bruce K. Stanz.   He is also survived by his extended family, friends, and friends who have become family.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.  Internment will be held privately at the NH State Veteran Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to the Disabled American Veterans at DAV.ORG or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, at STJUDE.ORG.
