Geraldine (Rood) Towey Obituary
Geraldine Ann (Rood) Towey, (Gerry) (Mom) 89, died peacefully Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Nashua Post Acute Care surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late James J. Towey, Jr., with whom she shared 40+ years of marriage prior to his passing on January 1, 1997.
Geraldine was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 11, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Daniel M. and Catherine V. (Kinal) Rood. She was confirmed in the Catholic church Geraldine Ann Bernadette Rood. She was a graduate at 18 years old of St Joseph’s Catholic High School Brooklyn NY. where she mastered Pitman shorthand and typing and loved English, especially solving crossword puzzles. She was a bank teller for Federation Bank and Trust Company while living in New York.
Geraldine lived a life defined by dedication, resilience, and unwavering love for her family. Throughout the years, she was expert in shorthand, typing, and held various positions including accounting, secretarial work and cashier roles.
Geraldine’s most treasured and boastful role was that of mom. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to caring for and raising her children, James III (Jimmy), Dawn and Neil creating a home filled with love, guidance, and steady support. She found her greatest joy in nurturing her family, celebrating their accomplishments, and being their constant source of strength. Christmas was always a favorite time of year she was always happiest during the Christmas Holiday Season. She always enjoyed and loved hosting family summer barbecues and playing records with family and best friends in Derry Sandy, Cathy and many others.
In her younger years she grew up with seven brothers and sisters in a beautiful loving home on President St. in NY that her dad who was a teacher and artist created a beautiful hand painted garden mural area complete with a goldfish pond, which she loved. Her mom was a fabulous cook and was famous for her pierogies, spaghetti sauce and fried baloney sandwiches which Gerry cooked often for her family. The house had many floors, and she shared the top floor bedroom in her teenage years with her sisters Cherry, Jane and Margaret enjoying playing her records and she had her own telephone and was always talking on the phone to friends. Cute memory from her sister Cherry was that she would sneak leftovers as special treats and feed them to Sally the family dog. Gerry had a very best friend named Joan and Jeannette Young as well as her sister Theresa were close when they lived on 22nd and 24th Street in Brooklyn and eventually Seaford N.Y.
After marrying James (Jim) Towey Jr. on President Street, she lived in Seaford Long Island N.Y. in a beautiful home which was her favorite place to live and would often have visits from her mom and family. After a brief move with the family to Dallas Texas, she and her family resided at 30 Schurman Dr. in Derry N.H. for the last 50 years, where the family eventually settled, before reaching the age of 89. She was loved by many friends and touched the hearts of many people.
Whenever she found a quiet moment to herself, Geraldine delighted in tending to her vegetable garden and take care of her cats Snapper, Jake and Jack and the family dog Mick as well as numerous chicks, turtles and rabbits as family pets over the years, which brought her much joy.
She loved to travel and explore new places, including Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, GA, Cape Cod (one of her favorite places when she was younger) and all the States in the North East, creating lasting memories along the way. Of all the destinations she visited, her favorite was a treasured trip to France with her beloved husband, James; a journey she often reminisced about with great joy.
Above all else, Geraldine deeply loved her family. She especially looked forward to her family’s annual yearly car trips to New York to visit her mother, sisters and brothers and other relatives, ensuring that meaningful memories were made for herself and her children. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Her three children, James Towey III and his wife Ilene of Florida, Dawn A. (Towey) Donovan of Nashua, and Neil Towey and his wife Sonja of Bedford; her two grandchildren, Nicolas Towey and his significant other, Jennifer Appleby and Olivia Towey and her fiancé Elliot Wechter, all loved her very much and will miss her. Very sadly, Geraldine was predeceased by her grandson, Jesse Towey who she loved very much and her siblings,
Gerry has many sibling’s and family members, God Bless them all both in Heaven and some are still with us.
