Gregory Surbey Obituary

Gregory Charles Surbey, 37, of Nashua, New Hampshire, passed away recently of a currently-unknown cause.

Greg was born October 31, 1983, to Debra (Wise) Surbey and Glen Surbey in Reston, Virginia. He lived with his mother in Centreville, Virginia, until near the end of his 4th grade year when they moved to Coolville, Ohio, to be close to Greg’s maternal grandparents, Edsel and Mary Wise, his uncle and aunt, Les and Linda Wise, and his cousins.

After completing 8th grade, Greg moved to Vienna, Virginia, to live with his father where he attended James Madison High School. After graduation he studied Computer Science at George Mason University.

In 2006, Greg moved to Annapolis, Maryland, where he worked for AT&T.

Inspired by the mission of The Free State Project, Greg moved to New Hampshire in 2007 to join like-minded, liberty-loving friends dedicated to creating an ethical and prosperous society built on individual freedom and liberty.

In 2007, Greg became involved with politics and worked on the 2008 grassroots presidential campaign to elect Congressman Ron Paul. He made many friends in NH and regularly attended liberty events and socials, including the Annual NH Liberty Forums and Porcupine Freedom Festivals organized by The Free State Project.

Greg cared deeply about his community. He ran for State Representative in 2009 and 2011, for Nashua Alderman, Ward 6, in 2015, and for the Nashua School Board in 2019.

When he first moved to New Hampshire, Greg worked as a Software Systems Engineer for MIT Lincoln Labs in Lexington, MA. Positions at other companies included Senior Operations Engineer at PatientsLikeMe in Cambridge, MA, Senior Operations Engineer at WWPass in Bedford, NH, PKI Operations Engineer at MIT Lincoln Labs, and finally, Senior Developer Operations Engineer at PeopleNet in Bedford, NH.

Thanks to his early research, understanding of, and investment in Bitcoin, Greg was able to retire from full-time employment in August of 2017 to pursue his dream of creating his own company. He worked on his blockchain-related start-up project, General Cryptographic Systems, and dedicated his time and energy to investing and acquiring knowledge that would help secure his future and achieve his goals.

Greg’s interests included computer science, robotics, entrepreneurship, cryptocurrencies & blockchain projects, economics, monetary policy, politics, naturopathic health, education, and travel. He was an avid seeker of information and self-improvement.

For fun, Greg enjoyed computer gaming, watching movies and documentaries, skiing, dining, visiting near-by attractions, hiking, vacations, visiting his family, long rides on his motorcycle, cultural events, and spending time with his friend of 13 years, Linda Lagana.

Greg is survived by his mother, Debra (Wise) Surbey, his father, Glen Surbey, his stepmother, Lisa, his half-brothers, Stephen, Michael, and Wyatt, his uncle and aunt, Les and Linda Wise, and his extended family of other uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 8th, at the Alpine Grove in Hollis, NH. An urn burial service will take place on a later date at the Coolville Cemetery in Ohio.
