Joan Sweeny Obituary

NASHUA- Joan (Brennan) Sweeny, 90, died peacefully on Thursday evening, November 7, 2019, at The Huntington surrounded by her loving family. Joan was the beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Sweeny who predeceased her on June 21, 2009 after sharing 57 wonderful years of marriage.

Joan was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 1, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Eugene Francis and Kathryn (Scanlon) Brennan. She received her bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College in 1951. She was a resident of Nashua, NH and previously lived in New London, NH and Wayland MA.

Joan loved to explore and experience the world around her through travel, reading and continuing education.  She was always in motion; walking, swimming, kayaking, water aerobics, snowshoeing and skiing.  Joan was the bedrock of the Sweeny clan and an amazing wife, mother, ‘Nana’, teacher and friend.  She had a deep intellect, whimsical sense of humor and deep love and loyalty to friends.

Joan always found time for family and friends and offered care and comfort to those in need as a volunteer.  She focused her love of reading by volunteering at public libraries in Wayland and New London; she delivered meals and companionship through Meals on Wheels; provided childcare and numerous other compassionate activities to all in need.

She is survived by her son Thomas Sweeny and his wife Melissa of Groton, MA; her son-in-law, Albert Kallock Jr. of Agawam; as well as her grandchildren, Madeline Grace Kallock, Jenna Sweeny, Christopher Sweeny, and Benjamin Sweeny.

In addition to her husband, Thomas, Joan was predeceased by her daughter Ann Sweeny Kallock and her brother Eugene J. Brennan.
