Julia A. Burns, 91, died in peace on 14th August 2023 in Washington DC. Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, Julia lived most of her life in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where she was known in her community of Victoria Park as a good neighbor, international traveler, and fervent animal lover. Throughout her life, Julia fostered or adopted innumerable stray or mistreated cats and dogs. After her retirement from a successful career in banking, she volunteered with the Victoria Park Neighborhood Association and spent many hours promoting various projects to upgrade the neighborhood. She also worked with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), undergoing weeks of training at the Broward County Fire Academy and helping to coordinate the work of volunteers leading up to, and in the aftermath of, major storms. After hurricane Wilma, the CERT served over ten thousand people a day for two weeks – and Julia was in the thick of it. She assisted her older neighbors with errands and trips to the doctor until she herself could no longer drive. At age 88 she took in stride a major life change and moved to Washington, DC where she again became a neighborhood favorite. She was warm, arch and fiercely independent, and she was able to maintain her self-sufficiency until the very end of her life.
She is survived by her two cousins, Sheila and Margaret, and her many friends in Ft. Lauderdale and Nashua.
