Robert "Bob" Bassett Obituary

Robert “Bob” Leroy Bassett, 76, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, February 1, 2024. He is the beloved husband of Jean P. (Polagye) Bassett with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage filled with square dancing, skiing, and road trips through the woods, shores, and mountains of New Hampshire and beyond.

Bob was born on March 19, 1947 in Yonkers, New York and was the son of the late Leroy E. and Edna (Boudreau) Bassett. He received his bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Monmouth University in New Jersey and later continued his education at Boston University, where he graduated with his master’s degree in computer science.

For 40 years, Bob was employed as a systems engineer for BAE until his retirement, receiving many technical awards throughout his career. In 2013, he traveled to London with his project team to receive the global Chairman’s Gold Award for Innovation, BAE Systems’ highest internal recognition award, for their GPS work.

In his free time, he enjoyed working with his computers and with electronics. His home is filled with the results of hours spent in his basement workshop, from custom bookcases lining the walls to the wooden swingset he designed and built for his daughters. He relaxed with leisurely scenic drives through the backroads of New England (especially during fall foliage), and loved returning to his favorite seasonal destinations year after year, from the winter holiday lights at Disney World, to the monuments on the National Mall of Washington, DC. Above all, his most cherished time was spent with his extended family. Bob’s deep love for his family shone through his many acts of generosity, including caring for his mother in the last years of her life.

Bob was driven by a sharp curiosity and desire to learn. As a boy, he’d take apart every mechanical or electronic thing in the house to understand how it worked (and put them back together at his father’s insistence). As an engineer, he prided himself on his adaptability, constantly expanding his areas of expertise through self-study. After retirement, he continued attending workshops and conferences to keep up to date in numerous different fields. Few things energized Bob more than enthusiastic conversations with people passionate about their projects, both professional and personal.

Bob readily applied his quick wit to lighten the mood, and took particular glee in pulling off small pranks and long-running jokes. He focused on the joy in any situation, emphasizing “There’s always fun to be had!”

In addition to his wife, Jean, he is survived by his two daughters, Laura E. Bassett of Washington state and Carolyn Bassett of Nashua, NH; as well as his sister Marilyn Rita (Bassett) Canning and her son, Bob’s nephew Elijah Canning, both of California.

At the request of Bob’s family, all services are being held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Heart Association.
