More American Families Seeking Cremation Services

Published: September 25, 2015

Many families and individuals are most acquainted with a traditional burial services, meaning the departed is embalmed, prepared for a final viewing, and interred in a graveyard within a casket sealed to protect against the elements. The interment is usually preceded by a memorial service that reflects the beliefs of the departed or their family. For many Americans, this has been and remains a standard practice.

However, according to the National Funeral Directors Association, the amount of families that choose to cremate their loved ones has increased sharply since 2007. In their report, the association has cited a number of factors that have influenced this trend in cremation services.

First and foremost among the factors that have contributed to this trend is the American recession of 2008. Many families that had investments they felt would see them through the end of their lives suddenly were taking substantial losses and, in some cases, failing outright. This forced many families towards belt tightening, and so, for those families, traditional memorial services and interments became too expensive. This, in turn, leads many families to choosing to cremate their departed loved ones rather than inter them within a cemetery.

The report also cited a drastic drop in the amount of families that have access or are willing to buy family plots in cemeteries. In a sense, this comes down to pure real estate and supply and demands. For those who do not possess family plots in graveyards, it can often be an expensive endeavor to locate and purchase a plot. Especially in New England, where real estate and space come at a premium compared to the rest of the country, the amount of families seeking out cremation services has increased even more than the national average.
