Obituaries are not a recent development by any means. Though the arrival of the digital has changed the way the public finds and reads obituaries, the utilitarian, as well as creative, aspects of obituary writing transcend both time and geographic location. Here are three of some of the most important obituaries written throughout history.

F.D.R 1945

When President Roosevelt succumbed to illness in 1945, much of the nation wondered whether or not the country would continue to exist as they knew it. Masterfully written by long-term political reporter, Arthur Krock, the obituary achieved two important things: it eulogized the lifetime achievements of FDR, and therefore the United States, as well as quelled fears over the transition to the Truman administration.

George Washington 1799

One of the oldest obituaries in American history, Washington’s obituary appeared in the New York Spectator. Interestingly, the obituary cited the cause of death, known at the time as Cynanche Tonsillaris, and made mention of its prevalence during that season.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Another well-written obituary from the New York Times, which had something of a monopoly on writing the features at the time, was the death of Martin Luther King Jr. Murray Schumach walked a fine line between eulogizing King without wading into the murky depths of the highly charged racial politics of the time.
